Dorian Thompson-Robinson didn't play well in relief of Watson. But the fifth-round rookie only deserves part of the blame for his difficult debut.

That’s a small sample, but it’s also the sample that coaches spend the most time thinking about. The opening play script is usually a pre-planned menu of their -- and the quarterbacks’ -- favorite plays. And Sunday’s suggested an overconfidence in Cleveland’s fifth-round quarterback and not enough in its well-paid offensive line or the running backs that the Browns were confident would be good enough after Nick Chubb got hurt.

It also reminded of the too-cute complex Browns fans have complained about since Stefanski was hired in 2020. Fans know it when they see it: On third- or fourth-and-short, Cleveland’s coach calls a jet sweep or throws it deep. Or, as Stefanski did on a first quarter 3rd-and-1 Sunday, he puts a tight end under center and tosses it to the quarterback, who throws it nearly 40 yards downfield.

The ensuing pass interference -- aided by an underthrown pass and Amari Cooper’s acting -- became Cleveland’s longest play of the day and setup its only scoring play . It also likely saved the offense from hearing boos. But the process behind it -- and his opening game script -- followed a familiar line of thinking.

Stefanski called his crazy trick play and came out throwing with a fifth-round rookie for the same reason he calls the jet sweeps: because he thought the Ravens wouldn’t expect it. If Baltimore’s defense paid any mind to the quotes out of Cleveland last week, it expected Watson to play. And it certainly didn’t expect to defend so many passes if Watson didn’t.

But after all that careful planning, the Ravens’ defense still succeeded. The Browns got blown out at home on Joe Thomas’ big day. And as a result, Cleveland has even more to think about concerning its backup quarterback position.
