Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson in minicamp, June 14, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio — The NFL is moving closer to informing the Browns and Deshaun Watson how long he’ll be out this season for violating the Personal Conduct Policy.
League sources have said the NFL Players Association is bracing itself for a harsh recommendation by the NFL of up to a year. The union, which will argue Watson shouldn’t be suspended without pay, will help him fight such a lengthy ban on the grounds that the league hasn’t come down hard on owners Robert Kraft, Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder for being directly or indirectly involved in alleged sexual misconduct by either themselves or those in their organization.
The league’s decision is expected to come before training camp begins July 27. Depending on the punishment, either side can appeal, and either NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell or a designee will hear it and can amend it as they see fit. He acknowledged that his remarks during his March 25 introductory press conference about having no regrets didn’t hit some people right.
