Bruce’s Law is named after Alaskan Robert “Bruce” Snodgrass, who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2021
. His mother, Nancy Snodgrass, has advocated raising awareness and preventing fentanyl abuse. Bruce’s Law will bolster federal prevention and education efforts surrounding the dangers of drugs laced with fentanyl, a potent and deadly synthetic opioid.
While on the Senate floor, Murkowski cited the Justice Department and said fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Bruce’s law started with education and awareness, requiring the federal government to create a nationwide campaign against fentanyl for school-age children, young adults, parents, first responders, and care providers.
Murkowski said, “The campaign will help illustrate the extreme dangers of pills and street drugs that could be laced with fentanyl, help prevent drug abuse, including through the same disposal of prescription medications, and help identify the early warning signs of addiction.” Bruce’s Law will also authorize new community-based coalition enhancement grants to educate young people on the risks of doing drugs contaminated with fentanyl.
