Hours before Buccanneers linebacker Devin White got on a flight to Germany, he received a phone call that his father died.
Instead of grieving about the “unreal” and unexpected death, White turned to football and provided one of his best performances this season just three days after his dad’s passing. The Pro Bowl linebacker led Tampa Bay’s defense to capturingWhite led his team with eight combined tackles, along with two sacks and a forced fumble.
And after statement defensive plays, like when he sacked Geno Smith and later caused the Seahawks quarterback to fumble, he blew a kiss to the sky and made a sign of the cross to honor his dad. “It was just like ‘This one is for you,'” White. “Just a lot of emotions. But I tried to turn them into good emotions and just keep a great spirit. That’s the relationship we had — just all about ball.
