The investment is part of the province’s record-setting $6.8 billion health budget, which seeks to solve conjoined crises of surgery waits, labour shortages and a critical care system fractured by two pandemic years.

Internal reports say more than 35,400 procedures were on the waiting list as of early February. More than 8,800 were delayed for a year or more,Merriman said this year’s funding, coupled with $20 million that went unused in the past two budgets, will allow 7,000 additional surgeries this year. Saskatchewan Medical Association president Dr. Eben Strydom said the step is welcome but doctors want long-term planning to address the backlog.

The budget promises $4.9 million to add 150 new annualized seats for nursing students. Part of a $3.5 million package from the Ministry of Health will go toward expanding physician residency placements.Saskatoon StarPhoenix Saskatchewan Union of Nurses President Tracy Zambory said the funding comes amid a “health human resources crisis.”
