We chat with Bupkis showrunner Judah Miller about how the Peacock comedy series came about, and how he and Pete Davidson fictionalized the comedian's life:
Pete Davidson puts his life on the small screen in the semi-autobiographical comedy series Bupkis, which he developed alongside his friends and creative partners Judah Miller and Dave Sirus. After being a fan favorite on Saturday Night Live for several years, Davidson has begun branching out into movie roles — but his most iconic projects thus far are still ones where he plays heightened versions of himself.
Judah Miller Talks Bupkis Screen Rant: I love how every episode has the disclaimer of, "This is inspired by real people, but not everything and everyone is real.” Is that you trying not to get sued, or there are there real people you feel will be offended by not real things? It was during the height of the pandemic that Pete texted me and was like, “Hey, do you want to write a show?” And I was like, “Yeah, of course, I do.” We just started writing the show in the vacuum of the pandemic, and we had no idea where it was going to end up or if it was ever going to see the light of day. But I think that the sense of playfulness and erratic shifting tone that happened – some of the boundless nature of the show – is because we wrote it ourselves.
The cast is bananas, from guest stars appearing as themselves to the actors playing the family members. Were there people that from the start you and Pete wanted onboard, or were there some that turned out to be delightful surprises along the way? Judah Miller: It's interesting because it's not a documentary, right? And this character of Amy, while there are inspiration points from Pete, it's not so specific to real situations between him and his mom that we went to her specifically.
