Safeway Fresh Foods of Vineland, New Jersey, recalled 32-ounce packages of diced organic butternut squash sold at Costco in Pennsylvania as well as in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., according to an announcement with theE. coli bacteria can cause bloody diarrhea and in some cases, a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. Healthy adults usually recover in about a week but young children and the elderly could be at risk of serious kidney damage.
The squash was sold between Sept. 7 and Sept. 15 and has a use-by date of Sept. 19. The Costco item number is 20522 and the UPC is 040232244124.The company said no illnesses have been reported to date. “The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company detected the presence of E. coli O45,” the company said.
