We gave three online grocers a taste drive. Here's what you need to know.
SINCE THE DAWN of the internet age, we’ve been told that the iconic American grocery store will soon disappear. Huge stores that stock 40,000-plus items make as much sense today as a Tower Records, the theory goes.
But grocery stores have remained largely impervious to the digital revolution—even in the wake of Amazon’s 2018 purchase of Whole Foods. Only about 3% of groceries are currently bought online. Food doesn’t travel as easily as an MP3 file, and habits, especially when it comes to something as intimate as food, are hard to break.
