Cal was tied 7-7 but in a span of barely 6 minutes stretching into third quarter, Utah scored 17 unanswered points to grab a 24-7 lead.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – OCTOBER 14: Bryson Barnes #16 of the Utah Utes fends off a tackle attempt by Craig Woodson #2 of the California Golden Bears during the second half of their game at Rice-Eccles Stadium October 14, 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah. SALT LAKE CITY — Star linebacker Jackson Sirmon is out for the season, rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza says he’s 100 percent after being knocked around and the Cal football season is limping along after a 34-14 loss to No.

Mendoza returned to the field minutes later for one more play, but when a comeback became unrealistic the Bears held him out of the final 7 minutes. Cal had chances Saturday, leading 7-0 early and even at 7-all entering the final minute of the first half. But the Utes controlled the ball with their run game, piling up a season-high 317 yards on the ground, including 158 yards and two touchdowns by sophomore safety-turned-running back Sione Vaki.

But Cal mostly recovered from that and was positioned to cut into a 24-14 deficit midway through the fourth quarter. Instead, freshman Mateen Bhaghani missed a 30-yard field goal and Utah responded with a 72-yard TD run by Vaki two plays later, extending the margin to 17 points. He got the Bears on the scoreboard first when he dropped a pass off to Jaydn Ott in the right flat and the sophomore running back dashed 48 yards for a touchdown with 5:41 left in the first quarter.

Junior Blake Antzoulatos started but left the game with an injury of his own. In his place, freshman Cade Uluave, who grew up 17 miles from the Utah campus in South Jordan, made a career-high nine tackles.
