Evacuation warnings were issued Sunday for the southern part of the Lake Tahoe Basin, in South Lake Tahoe (corrects an earlier tweet, which has been deleted, that incorrectly stated warnings were issued for the entire basin)
Some residents of South Lake Tahoe were ordered to evacuate Monday, as the blaze known asmarched toward the more populated areas of the picturesque Northern California tourist destination.
“This is an extremely complex fire,” said Tim Ernst, operations section chief of California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. Mr. Ernst said firefighting had been made difficult by drought, the area’s topography and the age and density of the forest. Containment dropped from 19% to 14% on Sunday as a change in weather caused the fire to expand rapidly. Fueled by winds, the fire pushed east by 8 1/2 miles and gained more than 25,000 acres, he said.
The entire South Lake Tahoe basin, in El Dorado County, was placed under an evacuation warning Sunday night. By Monday morning, evacuation orders had been issued for portions of the basin. An evacuation warning indicates a potential threat to life and property, while an order means there is an immediate threat to life and residents are told to leave immediately, according to Cal Fire.
