Opinion: California Department of Justice opens needed investigation into troubled Riverside Sheriff’s Department
Today, the California Department of Justiceit was opening a civil rights investigation into the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The department will investigate whether the sheriff’s department “has engaged in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional policing amid deeply concerning allegations relating to conditions of confinement in its jail facilities, excessive force, and other misconduct.”published in January of last year, Luis Nolasco at the ACLU of Southern California and Avalon Edwards at Starting Over Inc.
“From 2019 to 2020, RSD deputies reportedly shot at people 41 times. In 31 of those cases, the victims were not perceived to be armed with a firearm, bringing into question whether RSD used deadly force only when necessary or in defense of life, as required by law.” “In the years 2013 to 2021, RSD deputies killed more people in the course of making arrests than almost all of California sheriff’s departments.”
“Despite increases in funding, the RSD solved fewer homicides than 72% of sheriff departments in the state.”The Desert Sun newspaper has done a stellar job of tracking not only an unusual spike in Riverside County jail deaths last year, but also pointing out theon the properties of an elderly couple by sheriff’s deputies which resulted in a six-figure settlement last year.
