Most of the participants revealed that housing was not affordable, reporting a median monthly household income of $960 in the six months before they became homeless, according to the study.

The Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at the University of California, San Francisco released what it called the "largest representative study of homelessness in the United States" since the 1990s, which looks at the causes and consequences of homelessness in California.

"The results of the study confirm that far too many Californians experience homelessness because they cannot afford housing," Margot Kushel, MD, Director, UCSF BHHI and principal investigator of the study said. "Through thousands of survey responses and hundreds of in-depth interviews, the study’s findings reflect the incalculable personal costs of homelessness."Mayor Karen Bass is vowing to end street homelessness in Los Angeles by 2026.

Twenty-percent of the people surveyed became unhoused when they got out of an institution, two-thirds reported mental health issues, and 72% had experienced physical violence during their life."As we drive toward addressing the health and housing needs of Californian’s experiencing homelessness, this study reinforces the importance of comprehensive and integrated supports," Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency said.

The representative survey of nearly 3,200 homeless adults found that their median household income was just $960 a month when they lost housing. The median income for renters on a lease before they became homeless was $1,400 a month, half of which went to rent.

The $3 billion TransWest Express project and the $5 billion Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind farm have been in the works for over 15 years. Once built, the wind farm will feed electricity into the transmission system. The giant wind project is being built in Wyoming, which has seen a massive build out of wind power — and new farms are meeting more resistance from locals worried about harm to their views and wildlife. Whether opposition grows could depend on how future development occurs.
