Columnist Michelle Slatalla ponders these questionsMY MOTHER, an early champion of home fitness, swore by an exercise she called “the ankle slimmer.” She claimed to have invented it in the 1950s. It consisted of sitting in a chair with crossed legs and making tiny circles in the air with one foot at a time. You can do this while holding a cigarette, or at least my mother could.

As fitness fads go, the ankle slimmer had a lot to recommend it. For one thing, it didn’t disrupt the décor. The activity required no ugly equipment such as exercise machines, barbells, belts or ropes...
