Robotaxis can use information generated by surveillance cameras in the future to help navigate. This testing program in the UK will examine their potential.
Nissan, along with the UK government, Humanizing Autonomy, Connected Places Catapult, SBD Automotive, and TRL will use Leaf hatchback EVs to test out autonomous car functions in urban and rural areas alike, as well as supply chain readiness, over the course of the next 21 months in a project dubbed evolvAD.
"In our previous research projects, our AD team and partners have tackled highways and complex city environments. Now we move onto our next challenge: built-up residential streets and rural roads," said Robert Bateman, evolvAD Project Manager and Manager of Nissan's Research and Advanced Engineering team, Nissan Technical Centre Europe. The UK has yet to see a large-scale operational rollout of Level 4 robotaxis in a major city—the kind we've seen in San Francisco this year.
While there have been a handful of small-scale Level 4 trials in the UK, we've yet to see a major company launch robotaxi services in London. The backers of this project recognize the other aspect of robotaxis: Replacing driver jobs with other types of jobs."Self-driving vehicles have the potential to transform how we get around, making journeys safer, cleaner, and more accessible while also helping grow the economy by creating highly skilled jobs," said Nusrat Ghani, Minister for Industry and Economic Security.
It remains to be seen just how many new jobs could be created, compared to those that will be lost. And odds are it will first be seen in the US, as companies like Uber and others begin the transition to driverless robotaxis, which has been their goal for years.
