Can Will Hurd and other conservatives save the GOP from itself? | Opinion
We need serious conservative candidates who are able to separate themselves from the mess that has infected the GOP — especially the belittling, vicious rhetoric and the foolhardy nativist ideology.
Without drawing these distinctions, it will become increasingly difficult for Republican candidates to espouse truly conservative principles, especially on government accountability, fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense and an embrace of American leadership in foreign affairs.party should find a nominee who can stand up for principled conservatism because Trump
can’t win back the White House. He spoke about the need for a nominee who “understands that when you run in a general election, you have to appeal to voters beyond your base.” Hurd and other candidates like Nikki Haley who are trying to campaign on more traditional conservative platforms, are going to have a long hard climb against what the party has become.
They will do well to stay optimistic, to focus on the future and not the past, and to remind both the base and the public at large what fundamental conservative principles mean. They also need to make the case that they can actually win the White House, and pursue conservative policies while governing with the American middle in mind.
