NATO is also planning to increase troops in its existing response force to 300,000 from 40,000, and is doubling troops in the existing battlegroups in Eastern Europe. Canada leads one of those battle groups in Latvia.
Asked how much of difference an increase in what Joly characterized as Canada’s “soft power” could make when what NATO is asking for is additional funds and troops, Joly said there is a need for both. NATO is also set to expand. On Wednesday, the alliance invited Finland and Sweden to join, after Turkey dropped its objection. Joly said Canada was one of the first countries to publicly support the two joining.
