Every additional month that Canadians cannot come to the U.S. will cost the U.S. travel economy about $1.5 billion in foregone foreign travel spending.

To be sure, things still aren’t quite the same as they were before Covid-19. Americans would be wise to check online into what the rules will continue to be at any certain time in the future as to where and when they will need to wear masks. Some Canadian provinces and locales have mask mandates or, at the very least, more specific rules regarding the use of masks than others.

Already, Americans can travel, with few restrictions beyond having been vaccinated, to many foreign nations in Europe and even Mexico, where the vaccination rate is less than half of what it is here. And people from many of those same nations have the right to come to the U.S. under similarly modest requirements. So what’s the deal with keeping Canadians lined up at our border? It not only frustrates them, in frustrates – and does real economic harm – to U.S. businesses.

To be sure, a lot of goods have continued to move across the border in both directions during the pandemic. In 2019, the last year that any such data would make sense, U.S.-Canada trade was estimated to be worth about $719 billion, split almost equally between the two nations. And some portion of that trade has continued to happen even those people from the two countries could not meet in person.
