The IHS Markit Canada Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ index , a measure of manufacturing business conditions, fell to a seasonally adjusted 50.4 in December, its lowest level since August, from 51.4 in November. A reading above 50 shows expansion in the sector. The new orders index fell into contraction for the first time since August, dropping to 49.5 from 51.6 in November. Survey respondents pointed to subdued demand across the automotive and energy sectors, as well as difficulties winning new work in U.S. markets.
