Test scores dropped in some provinces, preliminary data show

However, the research doesn’t suggest these goals were achieved.

“One can argue that public health officials were well-intentioned but erroneous in their guidance to close schools. However, one cannot reasonably argue that they were doing their best with no information,” the paper says. Despite early data suggesting that COVID-19 did not pose a serious threat to children, school closures continued into 2022. These school closures will have lasting detrimental effects, MacPherson said.

Similar outcomes were reported in other provinces. In Alberta, the Calgary Board of Education reported that in 2018-19, 77.8 per cent of students passed the Grade 12 math final exam. In 2021-22, that had dropped to 63.6 per cent. And the number of students who passed English exams declined in that same period from 86.8 per cent to 78.8 per cent.Article content

During this time, there was also a drop in the self-reported mental health of young people. A Mental Health Commission of Canada survey from 2020 found that 64 per cent of Canadians aged 15 to 24 reported “poor mental health” during the pandemic — the highest of any demographic. Another survey, by the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, found that 59 per cent of Ontario students felt depressed about the future. One in five reported self-harm, and 18 per cent had suicidal thoughts.
