Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo almost helmed a now-canceled Star Wars movie. After directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, one of the most well-received Marvel films, the Russo Brothers went on to direct three other major MCU movies. Now, the duo behind Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame reveals that they almost joined the Star Wars universe.
During the SmartLess podcast, the Russo Brothers briefly discussed their love for Star Wars and mentioned “early conversations” about teaming up with Kevin Feige for a Star Wars project. Joe Russo mentioned how Feige, who worked with them for several years at Marvel Studios, is a huge Star Wars fan. News of a Kevin Feige-produced Star Wars film first broke in September 2019, yet years went by without any major updates.

Kennedy’s comments followed Lucasfilm’s panel at Star Wars Celebration 2023, during which three new Star Wars movies were announced. According to Kennedy, Feige’s Star Wars film was not canceled, as such a project was never in development.
Lucasfilm’s official stance on the rumored Kevin Feige Star Wars project was surprising, as the film was being openly discussed by writer Michael Waldron and then-Disney CCO Alan Horn. Waldron even mentioned that Feige’s Star Wars film wouldn’t be a sequel but rather an original story. Now, the Russo Brothers’ comments suggest that the project almost had directors attached to it.
Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie was likely in the very early stages of development. No official announcement regarding a Star Wars film produced by Kevin Feige was ever made by Lucasfilm. Regardless, it would have been interesting to see the Russo Brothers’ take on the Star Wars universe, especially in a film produced by their long-time collaborator Kevin Feige.
