A north side laser tag business survived a recession, a pandemic and the growth of other recreational trends. What's next?
owner Peter Murphy has seen it all from the front door of his modest location on Third Avenue SW in Carmel.
As Carmel looks to continue its redevelopment and Murphy evolves his business, Laser Flash plans to move into a massive new facility in Westfield. After his wife was recalled to active duty following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Murphy worked part-time to stay home in Carmel with their three sons.
"I was told when I got into this our customers would be 7 to 12 years old," Murphy explained."But our customers have always been mostly adults. I never would have painted all of this if I knew that." "I know I can't do long term," he said."I've survived... but I cannot continue what I'm doing now and expect to survive the next out-of-town entertainment complex."
He hopes to get the new business going then retire, either by selling or handing the reins over to his sons.A monitor currently sitting above Laser Flash's front desk flashes renderings of the new building, as well as a full list of all former employees. Murphy beams with pride when asked about his former employees, dozens of whom went on to careers in family entertainment.
