A man was shot in the leg while confronting thieves attempting to steal his catalytic converter in Sunnyvale early Wednesday, authorities said.
SUNNYVALE — A man was shot early Wednesday morning while confronting thieves attempting to steal his car’s catalytic converter, police said.
The shooting happened at about 3:30 a.m. outside a home on the 1500 block of Klamath Drive, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said in a news release. At least one of four thieves fired multiple shots at the man after he confronted them on his driveway, police said. He was wounded in his leg. The man is in stable condition and was expected to be released from a hospital later Wednesday, authorities said.
Police did not release a description of the suspects but said they drove off in a dark-colored sedan. Thefts of catalytic converters — attractive to thieves for the precious metals they possess — have skyrocketed in recent years in the Bay Area, sometimes leading to violence or turning deadly for thieves.
