As it moved ashore, rain and storm surge quickly caused severe flooding on the Abaco Islands.
"Conditions across Abaco Island, as well as Grand Bahama Island are expected to rapidly deteriorate Sunday as Dorian continues its track west,"."Dorian is expected to slow down its forward progression into Labor Day, which will lead to an extended period of time where hurricane conditions could be possible across the northern Bahamas."
Forecasts warn that two feet of storm surge combined with up to two-and-a-half feet of rain could continue to inundate the islands over the next few days. What's less clear is where Dorian will go next. The storm is expected to make a northward turn and work its way up the east coast of the U.S. this week, but a few models show it coming ashore along the Florida peninsula.Regardless of the storm's exact trajectory towards the U.S., meteorologists say residents from Florida north to the Carolinas should be prepared for potentially catastrophic rain, wind and storm surge.
"The actual hurricane force winds are actually starting to extend further out from the center," said National Hurricane Center director Ken Graham in a Sunday morning update on the storm.Graham noted that even if the storm doesn't make landfall on the Florida peninsula, coastal areas could still be adversely affected., while Dorian is now historically strong in terms of wind speeds, it's the threat of flooding that is the biggest danger to life and property.
