Many organizations and prosecutors have vouched for mother of 14 Melissa Lucio’s innocence in the 2007 death of her 2-year-old daughter.

TEXAS —

The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops made strides to convince Gov. Greg Abbott and the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant Lucio clemency. In a Monday release, bishops called upon officials to “reexamine the case to consider her history as a victim of sexual abuse,” and the “troubling interrogation by law enforcement and the lingering questions regarding the manner.”and many felt uneasy about how her interrogation proceeded. The film followed Lucio’s fight for an appeal.

“Interrogation may sometimes psychologically pressure even innocent people to confess to crimes they did not commit,” it said, adding that there's a higher risk of false confessions when an interrogation suspect is an abused woman. Catholic bishops in Texas find Lucio’s case to be the result of a flawed process by law enforcement. With no witnesses or evidence, police heavily relied on Lucio’s confession, in which bishops suspect coercion led to her passive admission after a rough late-night interrogation.
