CCS Open Division softball: Hollister’s mental, tactical adjustments key upset over St. Francis

SARATOGA – Hollister’s 4-0 Central Coast Section Open Division victory became official on the West Valley College scoreboard at 5 p.m, but the Haybalers won the mental game a few minutes after the 3 p.m. first pitch.

It didn’t hurt that Hollister executed a strategy that turned St. Francis’ fearsome bats into popup machines. Starting pitcher Sophia Mariottini pounded the inside part of the plate and dared the Lancers to pull the ball into gaps, something St. Francis was unable to do. The Lancers had already crushed Hollister 10-2 in the regular season, a game Hollister’s players admitted they weren’t ready for.

“Those were the two games we had circled,” Hollister coach Andrew Barragan said. “We had to make our adjustments for both teams.” She allowed one run in the top of the third, and then kept the game scoreless for the next three. St. Francis got baserunners on, with senior Carly Cummings going 2 for 3 and Jaime Oakland, Rebecca Quinn and Alexis O’Gorman all recording hits.“We knew what she was throwing, we just couldn’t get our barrel on top of it,” Keighran said. “We didn’t’ make the right adjustments, but I think we’ve got a lot we can learn from this game.
