Vibrio vulnificus infections normally occur in warmer waters in the Gulf Coast, but rising global coastal sea temperatures have made infections in the eastern U.S. more common.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a health alert warning people about the risks of flesh-eating bacteria across the U.S. East Coast after five people died following infection.

In a statement issued on Friday , the CDC urged healthcare professionals and members of the public to be on high alert. Infection by V. vulnificus can also be fatal, and around 1 in 5 people die following infection, sometimes within a couple of days of getting sick, the CDC noted. People who have underlying health conditions, such as liver disease, diabetes and conditions that weaken the immune system, are at a higher risk of infection.
