The CDC has found highly drug-resistant bacteria linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears has spread from person to person.
Experts said the strain of bacteria has not been previously detected in the U.S. and was difficult to treat with existing antibiotics.
The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates over-the-counter medicine, recently stopped imports of the product. The FDA visited a Global Pharma Healthcare facility in India for an inspection that started in mid-February, two and a half weeks after the company had voluntarily recalled the product due to possible contamination. At the time of the recall, there were already 55 reports of adverse events including eye infections, permanent loss of vision and at least one death with a bloodstream infection.
