We chat with Keegan-Michael Key & Cecily Strong about going from Schmigadoon to Schmicago for season 2 of their appletvplus series, stepping up their performances, and musicals they'd like to tackle next:
Schmigadoon! season 2 is about to return to Apple TV+, and is set to once again drop its protagonists and viewers into a world where musical theater and reality are one and the same. This season takes on musicals from the '60s and '70s, including Chicago, Cabaret, and Sweeney Todd. The shift in style is evident from the first trailer, as the small, colorful town of Schmigadoon has been replaced by the darker and moodier Schmicago.
Screen Rant spoke with Key and Strong about stepping up their performances and which musicals they'd like to tackle next. Cecily, I was just rewatching you singing "My Way" on SNL, which is incredible. Clearly, you have a flair for these showstopping moments, which you also get more of this season. How was it for you to go even bigger, musically?
Keegan-Michael Key: Yeah, that's a great way of putting it. You find them trying, or certainly Josh [is] trying to immerse himself into the atmosphere. He's actually consciously trying to be a part of the atmosphere, and [there's] the fact that he and Melissa know the rules. They don't know the specific rules, but they understand people are going to burst into song.
