Chad President Idriss Deby declares a state of emergency for three months in Sila and Ouaddai regions after deadly inter-communal clashes
Chad President Idriss Deby Itno speaks at the presidential palace in N'Djamena during a press conference on August 9, 2019 to mark the country's independence day.
The state of emergency will run for three months in Sila and Ouaddai regions where 50 people have died since August 9 in fighting between cattle herders and settled farmers, the president's office said. Drought and population growth have aggravated the conflict while an influx of weapons from conflict-stricken neighbours have made it even more deadly.Deby in particular blamed the unrest in Sudan, describing it as the "principal cause" of the ethnic violence.
