Chase Kalisz won the first gold medal for Team USA at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. The swimmer, 27, came in first in the men's 400 meter individual medley on Saturday . Kalisz, who won silver in the 400 IM in Rio in 2016, finished the race with a time of 4:09.42.
Team USA swimmer Jay Litherland came in second in the 400 IM just 0.86 seconds behind Kalisz, winning silver. Kalisz and Litherland are the first athletes to win medals for Team USA.
