Derek Chauvin has been moved from a Minnesota state prison where he was often held in solitary confinement to a medium-security federal prison in Arizona, where the former police officer convicted in George Floyd’s killing may be held under less restrictive conditions

FILE - This undated photo provided by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office in Minnesota on June 3, 2020, shows former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin has been relocated from the restrictive confines of a Minnesota state prison to a medium-security federal lockup in Arizona where he will likely be given a little more freedom and have a greater sense of autonomy despite his infamy for killing George Floyd.

Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Randilee Giamussoau declined to detail the circumstances of Chauvin's confinement, citing privacy, safety and security concerns. Experts said earlier that Chauvin was likely to be safer in the federal system. It typically houses less-violent inmates, and he'd be less likely to mix with inmates he had arrested or investigated as a Minneapolis police officer.

“It’s dangerous to be an officer in any prison,” former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger said after Chauvin was sentenced last month. “It’s even more dangerous in state prison because of the nature of the inmate population. There are gangs, for example. And police officers just don’t do well there. Those risks are reduced in a federal prison.”
