It’s so easy— and you’ll be able to get the health screenings recommended for your age. Health screenings can find medical conditions before they’re serious or when they’re easiest to treat.
However, many people only go to the doctor when they’re sick. Don’t do that. Some health screenings, like mammograms and pap tests, can find cancer years before you have symptoms or before it ever turns into cancer. Joelle Fierro, from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, is here to talk about a few things you should know about breast and cervical cancer screening.The thought of getting screened for cancer is really scary to many people. However, not knowing won’t change anything.
We are really lucky to have technology that can find cancer early. Mammograms can find breast cancer when it’s most easily and successfully treated. Finding it early means you may need less invasive surgery or treatment. Pap tests can find cervical cancer before it ever turns into cancer; when it’s just abnormal cells.It only takes a few minutes to get screened and most health insurance covers breast and cervical cancer screening.
The program provides breast cancer screening to women ages 40 to 64 and cervical cancer screening to women starting at age 21. You can call 1-800-717-1811 or visit cancerutah.gov to see if you qualify for the program.Some women don’t get screened because they don’t have a family history of breast cancer. However, most breast cancer is not hereditary. The 2 biggest risk factors for getting breast cancer are being a woman and getting older.
