Said quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko: “He knew it. We knew it. And that’s an area where we have to grow.” In the final weeks of last season and all throughout the spring and summer, Bears coaches have encouraged him to understand the best situational uses for his tuck-and-run magic. On third downs? Green light. Get after it. Move the chains by whatever means necessary. Down in the red zone? With six points within reach? Get those points.

I felt like once he got out there, I liked his decision-making process. That’s something he does that’s unique to him. But as we go forward, we will continue to analyze, ‘Hey, did you have a better option once you got out there? Or was running the best option?’ ”
“It’s all about understanding situational football and playing the game within the game,” Janocko said. “We’re never going to say, ‘Don’t be you.’ Because he is an exceptional athlete. But there are times when he doesn’t have to take that hit and there are times when there are other guys open who can run the football who can do just as well.
