Data shows property crimes are No. 1 issues in Antioch; violent crime down slightly.
Despite shortages in personnel over the last several years – especially this year – Antioch Police Chief Steven Ford assured residents that all beats are covered and there are no gaps in service.
The chief, who was hired permanently last fall, gave his first full crime and staffing report on Tuesday – days after it was announced that some two dozen officers were found engaging in racist or homophobic texts. Another eight officers are in training and will be in the field in six months or so while several others are “in the hopper,” Ford said.
In terms of calls for service, though, the calls decreased from 89,016 to 79,816, the vast majority of which were quality-of-life calls followed by fire/medical and information calls, Ford said. Ford attributed the longer response times to staffing shortages, but added that emergency calls only constituted 8% of all calls in 2022.
Another aid in fighting crime, Ford said, is the ShotSpotter technology, which helps detect gunfire, increases response times and enhances investigations. Since it began operating on March 15, ShotSpotter has been activated 84 times, averaging four incidences of shots fired being detected per day.Councilwoman Monica Wilson asked the chief to return every three to six months to give new reports so councilmembers can keep abreast of what’s going on.
