Carolyn Childers and Lindsay Kaplan put their own spin on 'boys' club' network organizations with Chief, creating a new way for women to support one another on the journey to high level executive leadership roles.
“Lift while you climb” is a popular aphorism about personal and professional advancement that Lindsay Kaplan and Carolyn Childers have turned into a game-changing approach to supporting women in their journey to executive leadership. Kaplan and Childers founded the New York-based Chief, a private network designed to give high-level professional women critical connection and resources as they continue their path to VP and C-suite leadership positions.
Studies abound that show mentorship and access to a strong network are crucial to professional advancement at any level. A recent study out of the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern University finds that women who have an inner circle of close female associates are more likely to get placed in senior-level positions after graduate school.
As women move up the corporate ladder, we face adversity every step of the way. Not only are we making more difficult decisions as executives, we’re also carrying the burden of increasing scrutiny. This microscope only intensifies if there’s only one women at VP and C-suite levels. To advance to the C-suite and stay there, women must be connected with one another in order to learn from mutual successes and failures.
Hammer: What have been some positive personal and professional outcomes of situations or experiences that seemed like setbacks or failures? While I’ve actively cultivated a network of role models and advisors, prior to founding Chief, I was still lacking the resources and support I needed to advance to the next stage of my career. Friends recommended I join YPO , even though I was a senior manager and didn’t meet the organization’s President or CEO requirement.
