Cornyn legislation will strengthen FBI child abuse investigations after Nassar failures, advocates say

Federal investigations into child sexual abuse will improve under legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, according to advocates and law enforcement officials., requires the FBI to use an approach championed by child advocates when conducting investigations into child sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking, according to the senator's office.

The legislation was inspired by the failures in the FBI investigation into convicted child abuser Larry Nassar, who used his position as a USA Gymnastics doctor to abuse hundreds of young gymnasts over many years. The multidisciplinary team model was developed decades ago by child advocacy centers, said Kenda Culpepper, the Texas representative for the National District Attorney's Association.Gov. In Houston cases, trained professionals interview child survivors in comfortable settings with no law enforcement presence, Colburn said. This can result in more objective, compassionate interviews and help strengthen the case during prosecution, he said.
