, Superintendent Paula Patterson said the district has received 100-plus applications “from experienced teachers” in the couple of weeks since the school board approved the measure by a 4-3 vote.Days after the vote, Bob Sanborn, president and CEO for Children At Risk, was critical of the move, saying it would mostly jeopardize the most vulnerable students in the district. More than 50 percent of Crosby ISD’s 6,700 students are economically disadvantaged, the Chronicle previously reported.
He said even if instructional minutes are made up with an extended school day, the additional time may not provide the same quality of instruction due to factors such as students’ attention spans. “The four-day instructional week calendar has worked well academically in other districts with a significantly higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students than Crosby ISD,” the district said.
Patterson said at a February meeting with the community prior to the vote that she would be willing to go back to the five-day schedule the following school year if they saw the four-day schedule wasn’t working. Every district, he said, sets it up differently and thus far, haven’t seen a drop in academic numbers.
