Many youth express fears that adults with control over their lives don’t have the courage to do what’s needed to protect them.
Previous generations of young people had to cope with fears of a dangerous world, much like kids today. Thousands of students in the 60s hid under desks to practice surviving a Russian nuclear bomb.
Interns with PennLive and the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg organized the 2022 International Young Leaders Conference to talk about the issues they fear most threatens their futures. Second, today’s kids face the mutating monster known as COVID-19. Unlike many adults eager to just ignore COVID and go on with their lives, many young people trust science and they know the virus is still a threat. Many are sincerely afraid of what COVID still can do to them and vulnerable family members. And they want to protect their grandparents.
Philadelphia alone needs 900 of those teachers, leaving the rest of the state to battle for the remaining. And this is not a problem unique to public schools. Lindsay Bowman, head of Middle and Upper Schools at Harrisburg Academy, says independent schools are also competing to attract the best teachers and to manage the challenges COVID has brought to education.
Let’s face it, many people with the gentle and patient spirits required to nurture young lives recoil at the thought of carrying a gun into the classroom. They’d rather work somewhere else, which will mean larger class sizes, at least in public schools; and drastic changes in how kids are taught.
