BBC North West Tonight is given exclusive access to the child mental health team in Liverpool.
By September the number of referrals made to Liverpool's child and adolescent mental health services team had already surpassed the more than 3,500 received during the whole of last year.
"When a child is expressing suicidal ideation every single day to a parent, you can imagine that's really distressing for them," says Zoe. The team are trained specialists, ready to pick up the phone and help children and their families who find themselves in deep distress. "But sometimes you put the phone down and you have to take a really big breath in response to what you've just heard, which can be really traumatic for the staff to listen to, as well as for the families involved."
