The lockdown of Xi’an comes just days after new infections linked to the city were detected in Beijing and other parts of China.
Chinese authorities on Thursday imposed a lockdown on the northern city of Xi’an as the number of locally transmitted Covid-19 cases in the area continued to climb, a move that is a result of China’s stringent pursuit of ‘zero-Covid’ cases in the country just weeks before it is set to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in its capital.
The lockdown went into effect at midnight on Wednesday with no indication on how long it will be in place. Xi’an’s 13 million residents have been ordered to stay home, non-essential businesses have been ordered to close and all outbound travel from the city has been suspended barring exceptional circumstances.
Under the lockdown rules, one person from each household will be allowed to step outside to purchase necessary items like groceries.of cases linked to Xi’an in several other regions of China including the capital Beijing.7. That’s the total number of omicron cases that China has officially detected inside its borders so far, six of which were reported in the country’s southern part.
