Chris Pratt admits worrying that The Super Mario Bros. Movie wouldn’t be good and recalls how relieved he was watching it for the first time.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie star Chris Pratt admits that he was initially quite worried that the movie wouldn't be any good. Based on the beloved Nintendo video game, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was released last week to mostly mixed reviews from critics. The movie was a major hit with audiences, though, and crushed box office expectations by a considerable margin.

There was initial skepticism that The Super Mario Bros. Movie would be able to live up to the quality of the game franchise upon which it is based, and Pratt, in a recent interview with ET, now reveals that he was among those who were worried about how the film would turn out. Those fears were alleviated, however, when he saw the movie for the first time. Check out Pratt's full comment below:

It was just such a relief. I was as nervous as everybody else that this was going to get screwed up and I was grateful that it didn’t.”

Why The Super Mario Bros. Movie Isn't A Let-Down Even before Pratt's Mario voice was unveiled to the world, there was a considerable backlash to his casting. This backlash continued when the first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer was released, and Pratt's Mario was revealed to sound mostly just like his own voice. This backlash seems to have been mostly misplaced, however, because the movie has been a global smash hit and boasts a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie largely plays it safe, telling a straightforward story with some impressive animation. The degree to which the adaptation plays it safe means it's not necessarily an outstanding or exceptional film, but it does indeed accomplish the difficult task of adapting a renowned and beloved video game for a global audience. While Pratt may have initially been worried, the huge success of The Super Mario Bros.
