Chris Rock's mother, Rose, opens up about Will Smith slapping her son during the Oscars. 'When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me. No one even heard [Questlove's] speech... everyone was sitting there like, 'what just happened?''
Comedian Chris Rock's mother has officially opened up about Will Smith slapping her son during the 2022 Academy Awards. There are many good reasons that the 2022 Oscars ceremony could have been remembered. Jane Campion won Best Director for The Power of the Dog, making her the first woman in history to win an Oscar for directing and screenwriting. CODA star Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, making him only the second deaf actor ever to win an Academy Award.
As many know, the real reason the 2022 Oscars ceremony will be remembered is Smith slapping Rock across the face after Rock made a somewhat tasteless joke about how Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock's joke was in reference to Pinket Smith's shaved head, saying she looked ready to star in a G.I. Jane remake. However, Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia which causes hair loss.
"I wouldn’t take his award away, and I don’t see any good way they could have taken him out without disrupting. I feel really bad that he never apologized. I mean his people wrote up a piece saying I apologize to Chris Rock, but you see something like that is personal, you reach out." What is perhaps most surprising is Rose's assertion that the Academy handled the situation the best they could. Since the incident, many have questioned why Smith wasn't removed from the ceremony immediately after the slap. Others still do not think the actor's punishment was severe enough, with many calling for Smith's newly won Oscar to be taken away.
Despite being Rock's mother, and therefore more emotionally close to the situation, Rose has shown admirable maturity towards the situation. Certainly more than many people who have no connection to either of the actors involved have shown. For Rose, she is simply sad that a special moment for her son was taken away, and rightfully disappointed that the only apology her family has received from Smith was likely crafted for him by a team of people.
