trade for Christian McCaffrey last week brought up feelings of both hope and nervousness. The hopeful bit: McCaffrey, one of the most versatile and least wrangle-able backs in the NFL, would join Kyle Shanahan’s pin-and-pull paradise, as perfect an on-paper match of scheme and star as you’ll find in a midseason swap.
The only downside to McCaffrey’s eruption, to my '90s-child sensibility, was how clearly it reflected his status not as a throwback archetype but as a singular newfangled force. The first suggestion that the day might have something special in store came on his first throw of the season, the payoff in a trick-playthat found Brandon Aiyuk running free to the end zone.
In the context of the game, that first down mattered quite a bit. San Francisco was scoreless at that point, and the continuation of the drive set up the shot to Aiyuk. In the context of the season, it may matter a good deal more. For all its star power —
