49ers to practice without Christian McCaffrey because of knee pain
SANTA CLARA — Running back Christian McCaffrey will miss his first practice since joining the 49ers a month ago, the result of “knee irritation” in Sunday’s“He just felt something in it, some irritation,” coach Kyle Shanahan said before Wednesday’s practice, their first session ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Miami Dolphins.
McCaffrey has not missed a game this season, appearing in six with the Carolina Panthers and the ensuing five with the 49ers sinceThe 49ers’ backfield also will be without Elijah Mitchell, butas a left knee sprain likely will keep him out until the playoffs, if the first-place 49ers qualify. Rookies Jordan Mason and Ty Davis-Price will get more looks in practice, along with veteran Tevin Coleman, who’s on the practice squad.
Mason had five carries for 25 yards to help kill the clock in Sunday’s win, to which Shanahan said the team was “impressed with how he looked running the ball. It reminded us how he went in preseason. Those guys have been waiting for their opportunities. … A guy who hasn’t been in that much, I’d like not to put pressure on him and have vets out there. But I’m glad we did. He held onto the ball great.
Right guard Spencer Burford’s availability will be determined during warmups. He sprained his right ankle in Sunday’s third quarter.
