Christopher Bell wins NASCAR dirt race at Bristol.
When NASCAR re-introduced dirt racing to its top level Cup Series in 2021, drivers in the series with backgrounds in dirt racing were expected to be the major powers in the race. Through two years, open wheel stars like Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson were instead shut out by Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, two drivers who grew up racing on paved tracks. Bell finally changed that today.
The vast majority of the day's 250 laps were led by racers who got their start on dirt, split between former dirt late model star Tyler Reddick and open wheel aces Larson and Bell. Larson would fall out of contention after crashing in an altercation with Ryan Preece, but Reddick was able to stay with Bell until the end and pressure him on the final restart.
Although the dirt race at Bristol is just 250 laps of the half-mile track long, the final caution was one of 14 separate stoppages. That may seem like a lot, but the previous two dirt races at Bristol had 10 and 14 cautions. If NASCAR plans to continue racing on this temporary dirt surface at Bristol, a long race delayed by many cautions should be the expectation.
As it traditionally has since this race began in 2021, Bristol Motor Speedway will revert back to a paved track before its famous Fall night race. That event will be held in September, while NASCAR will return to a traditionally-paved short track when it heads to Martinsville next weekend.
