Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has officially been rated R, making it the filmmaker’s first R-rated movie since his 2002 thriller Insomnia.
Oppenheimer has officially been rated R, marking Christopher Nolan's first R rating in over 20 years. The filmmaker's upcoming historical epic chronicles the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, a leading figure in the creation of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy in the leading role with supporting cast members including Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, and Matt Damon, among others.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ahead of the Oppenheimer release date this summer, Universal Pictures has now confirmed to Variety that Oppenheimer will carry an R-rating. It's currently unclear what elements of the film have resulted in the rating. Nolan's last film to feature the rating is 2002's Insomnia, with 2000's Memento also being rated R.
What Oppenheimer's R Rating Means For The Movie Before news of the film's rating broke, Oppenheimer was already shaping up to be a very different kind of movie for Nolan. Much of the director's work over the last two decades has been spent telling action-packed, high-concept stories, many of which involved elements of science fiction. As a movie based on a real figure and real events, however, Oppenheimer was almost guaranteed to be a more grounded and character-driven story.
The R rating suggests that Oppenheimer won't be shying away from painting a more real, nuanced, and mature picture of the man behind the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer's romantic relationships, for example, seem to be a key part of the plot, with Florence Pugh playing Jean Tatlock, a psychologist and someone with whom Oppenheimer became romantically involved. Emily Blunt, similarly, plays Katherine "Kitty" Puening, the man's eventual wife.
