Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told Senate Democrats to prepare for a possible vote on the new debt ceiling bill on Friday at the earliest.
In a letter sent to party members in the Senate, Schumer said that the Senate would vote on the bill as soon as possible. As it must first pass through the House, he estimated that it would reach them around Friday. He also pledged to carefully read the text of the bill when it becomes available."When the bill passes the House, I will move to immediately begin consideration of the agreement in the Senate," Schumer said.
He went on to praise President Joe Biden for striking a deal regarding the bill while criticizing Republicans for being"extreme." "I salute President Biden for protecting the American economy and delivering for American families by taking the threat of default off the table," Schumer continued."I look forward to seeing the language of the agreement and reviewing it carefully. I will continue to keep you informed as I get more information from the White House and the House of Representatives.
Schumer was highly critical of Republicans throughout negotiations, arguing that refusing to raise the debt ceiling unless certain cuts were made was not the way of going about things. A tentative deal was reached between Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday.
