Cincinnati Zoo officials say Lightning, a Linne’s two-toed sloth, gave birth at the zoo last week.

A baby sloth clings to its mother, Lightning, at the Cincinnati Zoo. CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Zoo is quickly spreading the news about one of its slowest creatures.

Zoo officials say Lightning, a Linne’s two-toed sloth, gave birth last week. Zoo officials say the baby appears to be doing well as Lightning’s maternal instincts kick in. “This is the first sloth baby that our team has cared for,” Cincinnati Zoo manager of ambassador animals Julie Grove said in a statement. “We are beyond excited that the baby is finally here! We’re ready to provide support to Lightning as she navigates being a mom.”“We are monitoring mom and baby closely but remaining hands off for the most part,” Grove said.

The baby, which has not yet been named, is not on public display at the moment, according to the zoo. Officials also say they might have to perform a DNA test to determine the sex of the pup. According to the zoo, Linne’s two-toed sloths are not considered endangered but are becoming increasingly vulnerable because of human encroachment and activity.
