I went to a predominantly white high school in the suburbs of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We had new facilities, Chromebooks for every student, and experienced college counselors with lots of connections and insights to help me matriculate to a well-resourced college.
During the school year, I work at the local Boys and Girls club with low-income Black students like myself. These students – unlike their counterparts in Lancaster – share computers in their classrooms, have teachers who often leave in the middle of the year, and learn in school buildings that have issues like flooding, mold, and other infrastructural problems. They talk to me about going to college but aren’t sure how to afford it.
