The Padres are down two starters as the season languishes toward its unfulfilling end — though one of them is still working with the goal of returning for at least an inning or two.Immediately, Yu Darvish has been shut down after experiencing irritation in the tip of his right elbow while playing catch.The 37-year-old Darvish was diagnosed with a bone spur and stress reaction late last month, and was not expected to pitch again this season.
The recovery time for a stress reaction generally runs about six weeks, and Darvish said he doesn’t anticipate knowing whether he will need surgery until then. “Just mentally,” he said. “... It’s just like having a realistic goal of where I can be and reaching that successfully — like almost making it a situation where it’s like a must, like I have to get back as if we were playing into the postseason. Like that does something for me mentally and physically. And you’re convincing your body that it’s capable of things that you might doubt a little bit at the beginning.
Musgrove and Darvish are at the end of the first season of multi-year contracts. They will be in Peoria, Ariz., for the start of spring training in February.Blake Snell is widely considered a virtual lock to leave in free agency, largely due to the Padres’ desire to trim payroll to some extent. Snell has pitched his way into what will likely be a massive contract.
